Discourse Analysis and Grammar

The Verb Group Traditionally the verb group was studied following the Latin model of analysis, that is, it was classified according to the “tense”: Present Simple, Present Progressive, Past Simple, Past Progressive, Present Perfect, Past Perfect, Future and so on. This type of classification, although familiar to the Spanish learner, is confusing in the sense that it makes each tense an isolated unit, unrelated to the rest of the elements in the verb system. However, more modern studies of the verb group consider that each verb can have several modifications through which the whole verb system is created. Thus, Quereda (1993:73-102) describes the English verb group as the union of the base form of a lexical verb and five possible modifications:
